What is the best way to get rid of Mistletoe??

June 32010

We just moved into a new house and have a really large tree in the front yard that has mistletoe really bad. How do I get rid of it for good other then just cutting it out every year?

The only sure way is to cut it out, however, there is a "right" way and a "wrong" way and if you do it the wrong way, you will still have a problem. Mistletoe is a parasitic plant and lives by stealing moisture and nutrients from its host tree. The root system grows very deep within the branch. In order to get rid of it permanently without removing the whole tree, you’ll need to cut out some of the branch that it is growing from. Making your cut just below the clump itself is not the right way. It needs to be cut at least 18" below its growing point, towards the trunk of the tree. 20" is even better just to be sure. Yes, the roots extend almost that far and if you don’t remove them totally, it will send out another plant from these leftover roots and you’ll be in the same boat as you were before. Granted the tree may look a little lopsided, depending on the severity of the mistletoe, but this is the only way to get rid of it. There is no herbicide that is "safe" enough to do the job without possibly killing the tree. Hope this answers your question…

maybe a picture would be better than a description.
lots of thankings

If you need a picture, try Google! I don’t know how to put a picture in this answer. In my part of the world (L.A.–lower Alabama) there is a lot of mistletoe. It is a parasitic plant growing on larger trees, mostly oak trees. The mistletoe usually grows on higher branches. It is a green plant with small green leaves and small white "berries" about the size of a BB or a pea. The berries are in clusters but each "berry" is on a separate "stem". It is an attractive plant and I have climbed many an oak to gather Christmas decorations.

The Ends – “Mistletoes Are Jokes” Live

May 292010

The Ends (semi-acoustic) playing a song I wrote called “Mistletoes Are Jokes” at the first annual “Thunderfest” @ Thunder Mountain Highschool 1/15/10. It was a super fun show. Thanks to everyone who came! Lyrics -

“I wonder what we’re getting for Christmas this year.
Maybe it’s extra small, maybe it’s accidents.
My pen ran out of ink as I started my list.
It left you at the top.
I slid to your house and you wern’t home.
Your dad said you were out with some boy worth getting to know.
The corner of my eye saw pictures buried in snow.
The ones of you and I.

For Christmas, I wrote you a song
But Billy already wrote you one.
For Christmas, I thought you should know,
Mistletoes are jokes, this is slush, not snow.

I wonder what you’re doing for Christmas this year.
Maybe it’s Billy’s bod. I hope you feel like shit.
The movies on TV make me stare at my wrists.
It’s cold as it is dark.

For Christmas, I wrote you a song
But Billy already wrote you one.
For Christmas, I thought you should know,
Mistletoes are jokes, this is slush, not snow.

Mistletoes are jokes.
This is slush, not snow.”

What would make a camphor tree have so many suckers(second growth) that clump up like mistletoe?

May 292010

Posted in mistletoes | 1 Comment »

Every limb that has these sucker clumps has died back on the ends.It is doing the same thing as if it had clumps of mistletoe. The tree next to it has just the normal sucker growth on it and looks fine.

Are these grafted trees? If the tree has a swelled area at ground level it is likely grafted. If so, the swelled areal must be above ground level. it it isn’t the root used for the graft is putting up shoots from the native root and not from the camphor tree.

Is there a way to remove or kill mistletoe in large trees?

May 202010

I have two very large trees that are just being taken over with mistletoe. Any help would be appreciated.

Mistletoe is a parasite. It lives off trees by stealing some of the water and nutrients that would normally nourish the tree. Controlling mistletoe is a hard thing to do, because it attaches itself to the tree’s vascular system, the part which carries water and nutrients to all of the tree. If you simply break off the mistletoe, it’ll just grow back. To remove mistletoe permanently you have to remove the chunk of branch that it’s attached to. Paint the cut with some sort of paint or pruning sealant to prevent any diseases or wood rotting organisms from entering the the cut area. If mistletoe is on small limbs, you can cut the limb about a foot before the spot where the mistletoe is growing from. And again, you need to seal the cut.

Mistletoe is spread by birds, which carry the seeds on their beaks after eating the white berries of the mistletoe. When they wipe their beaks off on the tree or branches, the seed is deposited and will start to grow when the conditions are right.. Cutting out the mistletoe is the only way to control it. There are chemicals that will kill it, however, these same chemicals will also harm the tree itself, so it’s not recommended… Hope this answers your question. Good luck!

what are the most effective ways to rid my tree of mistletoe?

May 162010

My tree is covered in Mistletoe, and though the tree is green with leaves, I want to plan ahead to the fall and attack this crap once and for all… Thanks for your help.

I’ve got it too. The only effective way to get rid of it is to cut off the limb where the mistletoe is growing. The roots can extend one foot on either side. Of course, that is drastic if you have a lot of it and cutting off all the limbs will kill the tree. So I just let it be.
