We have a mistletoe on our ceiling. When ever I’m under it, people go oh no you
Are under the mistletoe! What is so
Bad about standing under it????
Kissing under the Mistletoe has its roots in the ancient relilgion of Wden or Wodn (we also get the name of Wednsday from him). Wagner wrote his famous operas " The Ring of the Nebulngenleid" based on the ancient beliefs pracaticed before Christianity took over in Northern Europe. They belileved that their religion would end with the "Twilight of the Gods." Baldar was a god considered a parallel to Jesus. This made converting the pagans a sho- in. Loci, the equivalent of Lucifer set up the slaying of Baldar. Frig,(our Friday is named after her), Baldars mother made every living thing promise not to harm Baldar. The exception being the Mistletoe bush. She didn’t think it was a threat. All the gods were throwing spears, rocks, arrows etc at Baldar. They bounced off harmlessly. Loci made a spear from the mistletoe and gave it to a blind man to throw. It pierce Baldar and killed him. Baldar was sent to Hel. We took it and added an extra l to make it hell. The only way he could get out is if every living thing sided in with his mother. Loci, the evil god, ran and hid and so Baldar was sentenced to stay in Hel forever. Frig changed the mistletoe into a little clump of branches that had to live off the good will of trees. It was now to puny to harm anyone again. It remains so to this day. Because his mother wanted Baldar to be remembered with happyness she declared that when ever anyone met under a mistletoe they were to kiss in remembrance of Baldar. Not to kiss would be dishonoring Baldars legacy. If I saw you under a mistletoe and not kissing, I would be obligated to honor you and Baldar by seeking out a kiss to fulfill Frigs’ wish.
